Census 2000 Commuter Information
(Source: Census Transportation Planning Package, CTPP)

The Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) is a set of special tabulations from the decennial census designed for transportation planners.  CTPP 2000 is a cooperative effort sponsored by the State Departments of Transportation under a pooled funding arrangement with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

CTPP contains tabulations by place of residence, place of work, and for flows between home and work.  In the CTPP, worker characteristics such as age, household income, and vehicle availability are tabulated by commute mode.  Information on low-income workers and their commute characteristics are also provided.

The data are tabulated from answers to the Census 2000 long form questionnaire, mailed to one in six U.S. households. Because of the large sample size, the data are reliable and accurate. CTPP provides comprehensive and cost-effective data, in a standard format, across the United States.
Transportation planners use CTPP data to:

  • Evaluate existing conditions
  • Develop or update travel demand model
  • Analyze demographic and travel trends
